Sweet little Squirt was surrendered to a local shelter with his 2 siblings. The siblings were picked up by a breed specific rescue and Squirt was left to live a mutt's life at the shelter. The shelter then set a "death" date because they claimed Squirt needed dental work and had allergies. Squirt was scheduled to be euthenized on my birthday and there's no way I was letting that happen. So, 2nd Chance 4 Life Rescue pulled him from the shelter and gave him a chance at a new life. We took him for his dentals and it turned out he only needed a cleaning. He has a full mouth of healthy teeth and has shown no signs of allergies in the month he has been with me. As an added bonus, he is just about the sweetest dog you will ever meet! He gets along with my other dogs and plays with them sometimes, but he really just wants attention from his human. He loves to be held and doesn't really care where you carry him or what you're doing as long as he gets to stay with you (at 7.5 lbs he's a light tow). Squirt would do best in a home with a regular schedule and family members that are willing to spend time with him so that he feels safe with them. Being separated from his owner and siblings really took a toll on him, and he will need help feeling safe in his new home. He is crated when I am not home only because I have other dogs and it is safest for him. He would love to find a family that lets him sleep with them. He wants you to know that he doesn't take up much space and will even sleep in a small dog bed at the very corner of the bed (as long as he can say he's on the bed...he feels safe!) Because of his small size, Squirt would be safest in a home with older children or calm younger children who understand that small dogs need a gentle hand. NOTE: Squirt has had a very rough and scary life so far. He has made amazing progress in the few months he has been in his foster home, and it is extremely important that his forever home is an enviroment that allows him to continue to thrive. Please understand that Squirt really only cares about his human. He gets along with other dogs and will play with them (only on occasion), but he would not be good entertainment your current pets. He would be a perfect companion for someone with limited mobility as he is happiest sitting on his person's lap and will do this all day long if he can. Some dogs will have fence requirements while others may not. A pet is a lifetime commitment. The dogs and cats in our system find themselves there, for the most part, because their humans did not have the same loyalty to them as they did to their owners. We do not take the adoption process lightly, and will do everything in our power to make sure the animal is placed correctly the first time around for your sake and theirs.
